Volcanic basalt-fiber and compact carbon fiber materials advance tripod performance

Professionals the world over acknowledge Gitzo products as setting the industry standards for excellence. In 2005, Gitzo, maker of the original carbon fiber tripods and magnesium alloy photographic heads, will launch some of the most innovative and high-performing photographic equipment on the market.

    Carbon Fiber Tripod Range
This year, Gitzo will change the face of the carbon tripod standard when it reveals its new carbon fiber range of tripods. While keeping all the original features – sturdiness, reliable vibration absorption and performance – the new carbon fiber tripods are lighter, faster and humidity resistant. The new tripods feature a tube thickness of 1mm rather than the 1.5mm models currently available, all while retaining sturdiness.

It only takes seconds to open and secure the new Gitzo tripods with the new Anti-Leg-Rotation (ALR) system. Just loosen all twist locks at the same time and pull down the leg before tightening the twist locks, making setup a mere 15 seconds.

    Basalt Tripod
Gitzo is the first and only manufacturer in the world to create basalt fiber tripods. The volcanic-based basalt materials used to develop them from the ground up provide photographers advanced performance and durability at affordable prices. Suited for all camera types, ranging from compact digital to medium format film, the new tripods are more durable than aluminum models with similar dimensions. Basalt fiber legs are tougher than aluminum, yet they are 20 percent lighter.

Basalt fiber tube fabrication capabilities were developed for the space program because of the material’s lightweight and fireproof properties. Gitzo utilized these while creating a new way of producing tripods. The basalt, a black rock, is pulverized, melted at extreme temperature and combined with other materials and spun into a strong fiber which is used to create multi-layer composite tubing. The result is a non-rotating tube of exceptional performance that meets the demands of today’s professional photographers. The legs are assembled using Gitzo’s “H.I.S.,” a dual “screw thread and glue” jointing technology that provides greater durability and reliability than alternative methods.

    Traveler Tripod
Gitzo will also launch the most compact carbon fiber tripod Gitzo has on the market. The Traveler, when completely folded, stands at a diminutive 36 cm. At 146 cm when fully extended, the Traveler rises as tall as most standard Gitzo tripods. But thanks to a groundbreaking 180 degree folding mechanism, the Traveler is a full 25% shorter and more compact when folded.

An excellent choice for use with all digital cameras, 35 mm and lightweight camcorders, the Traveler offers high maximum load for a very low weight. The travel tripod is the ideal solution for photographers on the move in situations where space is at a premium. And like all Gitzo carbon fiber tripods, the Traveler also offers unparalleled strength.

Gitzo, as usual, left no detail overlooked. On all tripod models, even the stabilizing hooks that used to take up space and snag on clothing or equipment will no longer be problematic. A newly redesigned built-in, spring-loaded, retractable hook on the bottom of the center column provides a place to hang a stabilizing counterweight such as such as camera, sand or water bags. Both the Basalt and Traveler tripods feature the Anti-Leg-Rotation (ALR) system.
