A Gitzo Story by Michele Bavassano
There are places where silence is so deep it almost feels alive, where every trace left on the snow tells a story, and where your margin for error falls to zero. The snow covered regions of Northern Europe are one of those places. It is here, among freezing temperatures and days filled with a light that is soft yet sharp at the same time, that I have spent countless hours in the field searching for those few rare and precious moments in contact with wildlife.
I have visited these regions for many years, in every season, however winter has always had something extra. The endless white plains, the frozen footprints of animals fighting to survive in an unforgiving environment: these are the details that turn every outing into a lesson in humility and wonder.
Through all these years, one companion I have never left behind: my tripod. And, more specifically, my Gitzo, built with the kind of stability and precision that allows photography to endure even in the harshest environments.

Light to Carry, Solid to Rely On
In these remote landscapes, stability is not a luxury, it's the baseline. Even when working with long telephoto lenses, in strong winds or on unstable ground like fresh snow and ice, my Gitzo has always provided a rock‑solid base. And it has done so without ever becoming a burden during long approaches on foot.
“When you walk for hours with the temperature dropping at every step, every gram matters.”
Built to Perform When Conditions Don’t
I’ve exposed my equipment to years of punishing cold, humidity, snow, and dramatic thermal shifts. Despite this, I’ve never experienced freezing, seizing, or stiff leg sections. Every movement has remained fluid and predictable, even after hours outdoors in sub‑zero conditions. When the landscape is motionless and you must respond quickly to a fleeting opportunity, this reliability becomes essential.
The Silence That Wildlife Demands
“In environments where sound travels farther than sight, silence becomes a tool.”
Wildlife like wolves and bears are exceptionally wary. The ability to make small, precise adjustments, without vibrations, noise, or sudden movement, can determine whether you capture the image or watch your subject disappear into the forest. Gitzo’s operational smoothness has allowed me to work almost invisibly.

Closer to the Ground, Closer to the Story
“Working at ground level gives a new dimension to wildlife photography. It allows you to step into the world of the animals, literally at their eye level.”
Thanks to the Ground Level features of my Gitzo tripod, I’ve been able to lower my point of view dramatically, resulting in more intimate, immersive images without sacrificing stability or comfort.

A Single Setup for Every Shot
I often switch between stills and video while in the field. Using a Gitzo fluid head lets me maintain a single, compact setup that transitions seamlessly between both mediums. No swapping, no rebalancing, just an uninterrupted workflow that lets me stay fully focused on the subject and the unfolding scene.

Travel Light, Stand Strong: Built for the Long Run
When traveling by plane, moving between locations, or hiking all day through snow-covered forests, weight and volume become critical.
“Gitzo gives me the freedom to travel light without compromising on professional performance. “
And, perhaps most importantly, it gives me consistency. My photography has evolved over the years, but the way I use my Gitzo hasn’t changed at all. That, to me, is the essence of durability.

Moments That Last and the Tools Behind Them
During my most recent stay in the Finnish taiga, I witnessed scenes that words can hardly capture.
The kind of moments that stay with you forever: the blinding white of the snow after hours of waiting, the absolute stillness of the forest, the sudden crack of ice, the quiet breath of a bear approaching through the cold air.
In those seconds, you stop feeling the cold. Adrenaline takes over. Your eye presses against the viewfinder, and everything works in perfect harmony, no hesitation.
“Extraordinary images are meant to live forever.
But they are only possible when the tools behind them are just as enduring.”
Looking back at the photographs, wolves emerging from the snowfall, bears wrapped in winter light, endless white landscapes, I also see the invisible moments behind each shot: the weight on my shoulders during the trek, the snow crunching under my boots, the tripod anchored in the ice, supporting not just my camera, but the entire idea behind the image.

Photography That Lasts Forever
That’s why, for me, Photography that lasts forever is not only about the photographs themselves.
It’s also about the tools that make them possible, crafted with uncompromising precision, engineered to endure the extreme, and trusted for a lifetime.
In my story, Gitzo has always been there.
And it continues to be.
